IRUHBI PILOTA: presentation
The project

With the collaboration in this project of various entities from Navarre and the Atlantic Pyrenees, actions will be carried out to revitalize Basque pelota in order to strengthen the attractiveness of this historical cultural element and improve cross-border relations. Similarly, a cross-border tourist product will be developed around this sport, in order to generate a tourist element that will contribute to diversifying and de-seasonalizing the tourist offer of the territory.
DURATION
The project started in January 2024 and will continue until December 2026.

ACTIONS
Establishment of a cross-border Basque pelota network. To do this, a diagnosis of the current state of Basque pelota in the territory will be established, good practices of cross-border cooperation in sports, cultural and tourism will be identified and, ultimately, a cross-border Basque pelota network will be created and implemented.
Actions to revitalize Basque pelota in the cross-border territory. As part of this project, various key equipment and infrastructure in the cross-border pelota area will be adapted, such as the Euskal Jai Berri fronton in Huarte and the adaptation of the Jai Alai Biarritz facilities.
Design of a tourist product. A new product will be defined around the historical heritage of Basque pelota and a plan and strategy will be developed to develop it.
BUDGET AND FUNDING
The IRUHBI PILOTA project was 65% co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain-France-Andorra program (POCTEFA 2021-2027). The objective of POCTEFA is to strengthen the economic and social integration of the Spain-France-Andorra border area. 1 The project has a budget of €3,602,895.50, of which €2,341,878 corresponds to ERDF funds provided by the POCTEFA program.
